Possible Options for Installation
of Web and Database Servers

On this page we present different options for possible system configurations. To help you select a configuration that best fits your needs please review benefits and drawbacks for each configuration.

Configuration A (we host both Database and Web servers)
Configuration B (we host SQL database and your company supports Web servers)
Configuration C (we host Web server and your company supports Database servers)
Configuration D (we provide only consulting services while database as well as WWW server are located in your offices)

Configuration A

(We host both Database and Web servers)

We provide:
Web server space including separate domain name (www.your-company-name.com)
Custom database connected to the web server
All maintenance procedures
Initial setup and programming
You need:
Web clients connected to the Internet
Benefits:
All maintenance provided by our staff experienced in dynamic web hosting
Fast Internet connectivity using our OC3 internet link
High security
Drawbacks:
Need to either migrate existing company database or replicate the contents to keep data on our side in sync with the main corporate data
If your company already has a Web site and do not plan to move it to us, additional domain name may be needed.

Discussion: Since we host SQL server many custom reporting tools as well as data access tools could be used to connect to the custom database from the remote sites in addition to Web access mechanisms. If there is a need to update web content it could be done over the internet and most modern web publishing tools support remote publishing. Our system is set up to provide the best overall response time for data requests via the Internet.

Conclusion: This is the the best solution for companies that need fast access to the data via the internet and either needs to create database from scratch or wants to migrate existing database to the database server.

Configuration B

(We host SQL database and your company support Web servers)

ConfB.jpg (91222 bytes)

We provide:
Database accessible over the internet
All necessary database maintenance procedures
Setup and programming
You need:
WWW Server, Microsoft IIS recommended
High speed Internet connection
Web clients
Benefits:
All database maintenance provided by our stuff
Your company has full control over the WWW server which could benefit in cases where integration of the Web server with the other company computer systems done not over the internet links.
Drawbacks:
You need to provide Web host maintenance personnel and insure that Web Server is functional
Need for dedicated hardware for Web hosting separated by firewall to provide necessary security

Discussion: In some cases hosting their own web server is critical for companies. For example if there is a need to access special equipment from Web pages this could be the best solution. In most cases generally Web traffic from page access and data downloading is much more intensive then database access traffic so for implementing this solution you will need really fast link to provide an adequate service.

Conclusion: If there is no special need to keep Web server in you company solution A probably would be better.

Configuration C

(We host Web server and your company support Database servers)

We provide:
Web server space in separate domain
All maintenance procedures
Initial setup and programming
You need:
SQL compatible Database accessible from the Internet
Quality Internet connection
Benefits:
You do not need to care about web server hosting
Fast access to your pages over the Internet
Drawbacks:
Need to support database server
Need for dedicated hardware
Lower security

Discussion: If the database server already implemented and closely integrated with business procedures in the company for example clients need access to the database by communication protocol other that tcp/ip it may be necessary to keep database in the company and provide connectivity to the internet. It also could be the case that database is not accessible for the queries over the internet. In this case you will need to make a decision of either replicate database content as a set of html files that get transferred to the Web server or reimplement existing database solution

Conclusion: This is a recommended solution for companies that has already implemented database server and do not want to support WWW server or has too slow internet link to provide reasonable access speed to their web server pages.

Configuration D

(We provide only consulting server while database as well as WWW server are located in your company)

We provide:
System setup and programming
You need:
Web server
Database server
Dedicated hardware to run Web and database servers
Personnel to maintain Web and database servers
High speed internet connection
Benefits:
Your company has full control
For some specific cases this could be the only feasible solution
Drawbacks:
High maintenance cost
Need for speed internet connection

Discussion: If limitations discussed in solutions B and C are present, this is the only solution that could satisfy your needs.

Conclusion: This is recommend when your company has sufficient resources and expertise to maintain own Web and database servers as well as fast internet connection lines.
